Formula

The US Navy method uses logarithmic formulas based on height, waist, neck, and hip (for females) circumferences to estimate body fat percentage.

Example

A male at 175 cm with 85 cm waist and 38 cm neck may show about 18% body fat, in the fitness range.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Navy method accurate?
It is a reasonable estimate for many people but less accurate than DEXA or hydrostatic weighing. Measurement technique affects results.
Why is hip required for females?
The female Navy formula includes hip circumference because fat distribution differs between sexes.
