Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest. It is a foundation for estimating daily calorie needs and planning nutrition.

Formula
BMR is calculated with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation: 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + sex offset (+5 for males, −161 for females).
Example
A 30-year-old male at 70 kg and 175 cm has a BMR of about 1,678 calories per day.
Frequently asked questions
- What is BMR used for?
- BMR helps estimate maintenance calories before activity is added. Many people multiply BMR by an activity factor to estimate total daily energy expenditure.
- How is BMR different from TDEE?
- BMR covers rest only. TDEE includes BMR plus calories burned through daily activity and exercise.
