Formula

Retirement nest egg = Annual retirement expenses ÷ (Withdrawal rate ÷ 100). Coast FIRE number is the present value of that nest egg discounted by expected return over the years until retirement.

Example

Needing $45,000 per year at a 4% withdrawal rate requires a $1,125,000 nest egg at retirement. At age 30 retiring at 65 with 7% returns, your Coast FIRE number is about $119,000.
